Presque un an après l’impact qui a bouleversé la vie sur terre. Miranda Evans reprend la retranscription de l’histoire de sa famille et leurs difficulté à survivre au cœur d’une ville désormais désertique et où l’espoir est difficile à garder.
La dynamique familiale va basculer notamment lorsque son père revient les retrouver avec sa famille et trois étrangers dont Alex Morales.
Cela est surprenant de constater à quel point il est aisé de se replonger dans cet univers post-apocalyptique. Et c’est avec Miranda que nous terminons cette trilogie puisqu’elle reprend son journal pour laisser une trace de plusieurs vies qui survivent au mieux chaque jour.
“The word we live in” réussit à maintenir notre intérêt pour cette aventure et ses personnages en nous offrant des rebondissements inattendus. Outre le fait que la situation change de par les conditions climatiques, Susan Beth Pfeffer fait entrer en collision les personnages que nous avons appris à connaître et à apprécier lors des précédents tomes. Ainsi des nouvelles perspectives et de points de vue s’affrontent. De nouvelles affinités et inimitiés se forment, affectant ainsi la dynamique de la famille Evans.
Des choix devront être faits, des existences vont être changées, de nouvelles définitions devront être pensées et c’est avec toujours autant de passion mais aussi avec une nouvelle maturité que Miranda écrit pour raconter les vies de ces personnes qui gravitent désormais dans ce monde dans lequel elle doit accepter de vivre.
The last survivors est sans conteste une trilogie superbe où Susan Beth Pfeffer nous entraîne avec brio dans un monde sombre et terrifiant où les émotions sont mises à nue avec des personnages crédibles et bouleversants.
Un univers lugubre et cohérent qui est le prétexte à des choix difficiles parfois influencés par l’instinct de survie mais où règne malgré tout l’espoir et de l’humanité. Deux facettes de l’Homme explorées avec justesse dans une trilogie où chacun des tomes offre le même potentiel : celui de vous engouffrer dans cette fin du monde de la première à la dernière page et de fermer ce livre en ayant l’impression de prendre votre souffle pour la première fois.
It’s very surprising to see that it is so easy to penetrate again in this post-apocalyptic world. And it’s with Miranda that we finish this trilogy because she starts again her diary to let the imprint of her acquaintances who try to survive every day.
“The World we live in” succeed to maintain our interest for this adventure and its characters giving us unexpected new developments. If the climatic conditions change, Susan Beth Pfeffer put also on collision the protagonists we learn to know and to appreciate during the precedents books. So, new perspectives and points of view are in confrontation. New bonds and hostilities form and has consequences on the family dynamics.
Choices will have to be made, lifes will be changed, new definitions will have to be thought and it’s with passion and a new maturity that Miranda write to relate the life of her acquaintances who live with her in this new world that she has to accept.
The last survivors is without doubt a superb trilogy which Susan Beth Pfeffer bring us on a dark and terrifying world where emotions are intense and the characters, deeply moving.
A gloomy and credible universe which is the pretext of difficult choices sometimes made under the influence of the survival instinct but also by hope and humanity. Two aspects of the Human investigated with accuracy in a trilogy where every book give the same potential : the one to plunge you from the first to the last page and to close the book with the impression to be able to breathe for the first time.
“People are going to die” I said as we loaded the bags onto the bikes “Isn’t there something we can do ?”
Matt shook his head. “Ithink you’re worrying about nothing,” he said. “The only ones left are strong enought to get to town. The sick, the ederly, they’ve either moved on or died. take Mrs. Nesbitt. She was in great health before all this, but she couldn’t survive”.
“So it’s only people like us,” I said. “Young and healthy.”
“Probably,” Matt said. “Survival of the fittest. And the luckiest.”
It’s so hard to think that, with everything terrible that’s happened, we’re lucky ones.
But we have food and we have shelter and we have family. So along with no broken bones and less gray skies, I guess that means we are.”
“I thought about the earth then, really thought about it, the tsunamis and earthquakes and volcanoes, all the horrors I haven’t witnessed but changed my life, the lives of everyone I know, all the people I’ll never know. I thought about life without the sun, the moon, stars without flowers and warm days in May. I thought about a year ago and all the good things I’ve taken for granted and all the unbearable things that had replaced those simple blessings. And even though I hated the thought of crying in front of Syl, tears streamed down my face.
“That’s good, ” she said, gently wiping my cheeks. “Your tears are the best offering of all”.
